From FIMC to Masq’Alors: reflections on community experiences of a mask theater

Abstract

This study aims to revisit the exchange experiences experienced by the Máscara Encena group through the participation of the show Imobilhados in two twin festivals: FIMC (Cariri International Mask Festival - Brazil) and Masq'Alors (Quebec International Mask Festival - Canada). Based on these experiences, this text aims to reflect on the role of masked theater in strengthening community identity, cultural traditions, knowledge, and celebrations inspired by such initiatives, taking as a starting point the group's performances at these festivals between 2018 and 2019.

Author Biography

Alexandre Borin Antunes, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul

Alexandre Borin is an actor and researcher. He holds a degree in Theater from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and a master's degree and is currently pursuing a doctorate at PPGAC - UFRGS. Co-founder of the group Máscara EnCena, he investigates the use of expressive full-body masks in pedagogy and on stage, both theatrical and audiovisual. He has experience in the arts, with an emphasis on theatrical interpretation, working primarily on the following topics: masked theater and theatrical interpretation.
