Vol. 11 No. 1 (2025): Rethinking John Dewey: Art, Experience and Democracy Nowadays

The Apotheke Journal, an online, open-access publication, is releasing an edition dedicated to original scientific articles on the theme “Rethinking John Dewey: Art, Experience, and Democracy Today.” The journal invited researchers, professors, artists, and students to contribute to this call, with the aim of revisiting the work of this philosopher and promoting a space for reflection and critique.
In 2024, it was 90 years since the publication of John Dewey’s most famous work on aesthetics, Art as Experience. This book not only consolidated the tradition of pragmatist aesthetics but also helped position the broader American aesthetic tradition within the historical-philosophical landscape. It is a complex and multifaceted work that addressed major concepts in the philosophy of art of its time. Dewey’s reflections in this book have since served as a source of inspiration for a wide range of audiences – from scholars of philosophy and visual arts to artists, educators, and teachers. Many of the articles gathered and presented in this dossier engage with this work, highlighting the ongoing relevance of Dewey’s philosophical thought.
This dossier is intended for readers interested in different aspects of Dewey’s philosophy. It was designed both as an entry point for those not yet familiar with the thinker and for regular readers of his work, who may find here new applications and perspectives on his concepts and ideas. Whether for those just beginning or for those already familiar with his thought, this volume invites readers to continue the dialogue with Dewey, exploring his multiple facets and the transformative power of his ideas.
