From Fabric to Code and from Code to Body: Skins, Fashion, and Language Apparatuses in Digital Games

The article investigates skins in digital games as contemporary forms of dress mediated by technological apparatuses. Through a theoretical-analytical study developed from an interdisciplinary bibliographic review, it articulates fashion, technical image, and game culture to analyze how these visualities circulate between materiality and digitality, shaping identities, consumption practices, and performances. The study departs from the hypothesis that skins do not operate merely as cosmetic ornaments for avatars, but as language apparatuses that program modes of presence, distinction, and recognition within digital environments. In this context, the concept of the amanual circuit of skins is proposed to understand the flow between fabric, code, image, and body — particularly when digital dress returns to materiality through practices such as cosplay. The article concludes that the digital does not rupture with the material culture of fashion, but rather reorganizes its modes of production, circulation, and rematerialization.
