Call for papers for the 2027 dossier “Indigenous aging: territory, memory, and ancestry”
Revista PerCursos– Faed/Udesc will accept for analysis, until October 6, 2026, articles, reviews, interviews, and Portuguese translations of unpublished articles related to the theme of the dossier “Indigenous aging: territory, memory, and ancestry”.
Brazil's population is aging rapidly, and in recent years, population aging has gained more space and relevance in research agendas and public policies. However, the aging and old age of indigenous populations are still under-researched compared to other ethnic groups, particularly white populations. The objective of this dossier is to reflect on the aging of the indigenous population in different parts of Brazil, in order to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge and understanding about this group. How is life ritualized and age perceived by indigenous peoples?
The indigenous population is distributed across diverse territories, and we are interested in addressing the particularities of indigenous aging in urban, rural, village, conservation unit, and other contexts. The way memory is produced and shared, especially through oral history, places the elderly in a central position for community life. Even so, these relationships undergo intergenerational changes, such as the increased prevalence of smartphone and internet use among younger generations. In this sense, we invite interested individuals to submit contributions that address the theme of this call for papers.
The contributions submitted to the dossier may engage with the following reflections: Meanings of the aging process and old age attributed by Indigenous people; Indigenous conceptions of illness and health; Self-care practices of Indigenous people; Generational and community coexistence of Indigenous peoples; Indigenous population in urban areas: challenges and potentialities experienced in daily life; Memories and traditions of Indigenous peoples; Narratives of struggles and resistance of Indigenous peoples; Basic and higher education of Indigenous peoples; Habits adopted by Indigenous people for well-being; Aging in rural Indigenous communities; Public policies focused on the Indigenous population; Knowledge and wisdom of Indigenous peoples: academic dialogues; Cinematographic, literary, and artistic productions of Indigenous peoples; Meanings attributed to gender and elderly women in the Indigenous imagination; Accounts and stories of Indigenous elders; Paths and challenges experienced by Indigenous people when using public services in the areas of health, social assistance, education, among others; Inclusive public policies focused on Indigenous people; Prevalent diseases and mortality rates among indigenous people.
The dossier will be part of the 2027 edition and will be organized by professors Adriana de Oliveira Alcântara (Universidade Federal do Ceará – MAPP/UFC), Áurea Eleotério Soares Barroso (Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo), Rodrigo Cardoso Bonicenha (Universidade de São Paulo), and Urânia Flores da Cruz Freitas (Universidade de Brasília).
