About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The Orfeu Journal is a publication of the Post-Graduate Programme, Master and Doctorate degree in Music, from the College of Arts (Ceart), of University of the State of Santa Catarina (Udesc).

Aims to encourage and promote the scientific and artistic production of the music field in its various sub-areas.

It accepts texts in Portuguese, Spanish, English or French, with solid foundation and relevance to the area of music, which can be developed nationally or internationally.

It publishes free-form and dossier articles, as well as reviews, essays, interviews, translations, and premieres.

Peer Review Process

First, the submitted article is evaluated by the editorial team who verifies the adequacy of the work to the editorial line of the journal. Articles that meet the criteria specified across this document will be sent to at least two ad hoc (external) reviewers. Once analyzed by the reviewers, the submitted article will be returned directly to the author with comments, recommendations and suggestions. In the case of significant differences between reviewers’ responses, the article will be sent to a third party consultant. There will be no recourse to denied work.

In 2021, the average time between submission and approval was 90 days and between submission and publication was 195 days.

Continuous periodicity in annual volumes.

Open Access Policy

This journal offers immediate free access to its content, following the principle that providing free scientific knowledge to the public provides greater global democratization of knowledge.

Fees

The Orfeu does not charge any fees for published texts, nor when submitted for evaluation, review, publication, distribution or download.

Digital Preservation Policies

The Orfeu is hosted at the Udesc Portal of Periodicals, which guarantees the preservation of its digital content through the Open Journal System, from the PKP PN system. Data recovery is guaranteed through periodic backups made by Udesc. The content is also preserved by the Rede Cariniana, which is part of the LOCKSS program.

Conflict of Interest

Conflicts of interest may arise when authors, reviewers, or editors have interests that, apparent or not, may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. The conflict of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic, or financial in nature.

When authors submit a manuscript, they are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced their work. Authors should acknowledge in the manuscript all financial support for the work and other financial or personal connections with respect to the research.

They should disclose to the editors any conflicts of interest that might influence their opinion of the manuscript and, where appropriate, declare themselves unqualified to review it. If authors are unsure of what might constitute a potential conflict of interest, they should contact the Journal's editorial office.

Ethics and good practices for publication

The ethical actions adopted by Orfeu to respect intellectual honesty are based on the Guidelines on good publication practice of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Among them we mention:

a) the structure of the text and the research design, containing theoretical foundation, methodology appropriate to the objectives, presentation and discussion of the results; here there is a care about the data analysis, because an inadequate analysis equals misconduct, as well as fidelity and integrity of the data;

b) the responsibility for the authorship of the text, since everyone must publicly assume that they are the authors of the content of the published work; we follow some CAPES guidelines, such as, for example, the co-authorship of the supervisor professor in the work of his students;

c) the conflict of interest in the sense of preserving the author's, reviewers', and editors' judgment; we try to designate reviewers who are not related to the submitted work;

d) peer review by experts external to the journal who must maintain confidentiality in the evaluation of the manuscript; the written opinions must be intended to contribute to the improvement of the study, being characterized as accurate, courteous, impartial, and justifiable reports - in this sense they are reviewed by us, the editors, before being sent to the authors; the relationship between referees and editors must be one of trust, and for this reason we maintain a dialogue when necessary to resolve specific issues; the names of the referees and the data on acceptance and publication time are published annually on the journal's website;

e) as editors we try to participate in events to monitor the guidelines that are being adopted to ensure good publication practices. 

Plagiarism

Orfeu, as well as all Udesc journals, is a member of Similarity Check, an initiative launched by Crossref that brings together several journals with the aim of protecting the originality of the content they publish. The Similarity Check uses iThenticate software to detect coincidences and similarities between texts under evaluation and those previously published elsewhere. By depositing all our content in the Similarity Check database, we allow other publishers to compare their submitted texts with those previously published.
