Abstract

The fashion industry faces challenges related to sustainability, from production processes to the disposal of textile waste. Adopting slow fashion, combined with ergonomic principles from the product conception stage, is crucial to ensure comfort, usability, and to avoid premature disposal. This paper investigates the integration of ergonomics and sustainability in fashion design methods, covering everything from the product conception phase to post-consumption for new products, aiming to strike a balance between aesthetics, user comfort, and sustainable practices. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted to identify fashion design methods that incorporate ergonomic and/or sustainable principles at various stages. A total of 750 documents were identified, from which, after applying filters, five were selected for bibliometric and content analysis—two focusing on ergonomic methods and three on sustainable methods for the industry. The comparative analysis of these methods aimed to understand different approaches to problem identification, planning, generation of alternatives, idea development, and materialization. This research is part of a master's thesis by one of the authors and contributes to the development of guidelines for designing sustainable, ergonomic, and contemporary products, applied to teaching and learning in technical and higher education fashion design courses. It is concluded that integrating sustainable principles, especially ergonomics, results in more comprehensive and responsible solutions that effectively meet user needs and contribute to a more sustainable and balanced future.
