Brazilian football and the construction of club identity (1970-1971)

The main objective of this article is to analyze the process of insertion of the third world championship in México in 1970 and the creation of the Brazilian Championship in 1971 within the National Integration Project during the Civil-Military Dictatorship. Throughout the narrative of this text, we argue that the Brazilian National Team during the world championship in Mexico and the creation of the first national club championship became objects that enabled new club identities to be constructed on the playing field. The Brazilian National Team and the football clubs awakened in fans feelings of belonging, of social and football amalgamation, something in line with the moment that Brazil was going through during the 1970s, inserted within a Civil-Military Dictatorship, in its most rigorous phase, the years of lead under the aegis of Emílio Garrastazu Médici. Therefore, during this period, the Brazilian National Team and the Brazilian Championship became tools used by the Médici government to build the National Integration Project, to build a national identity through football. Throughout this article we seek to engage in dialogue with some authors, such as Bauman (2005), Chaim (2014), Gonçalves (2013). We use Jornal dos Sports as our main source in this article, analyzing the football narratives covered in this newspaper between 1970 and 1971.
